Topic: Mystery Stories for Kids

Can the protagonist in a mystery story also be the sleuth who solves the puzzle?

For example, a girl experiences missing sheet music and damage to her saxophone while preparing for a concert yet ultimately she solves the mystery, as the sleuth, rather than a different character.

I think the sleuth in a mystery story is usually, if not always, the protagonist.

I agree. Look at the countless TV series centered around a Columbo-type (that's Monk-type, for you young'ns) detective who solves crimes week after week. The crime isn't always, or even usually, against them, but there is no reason it can't be.
