How do you go about checking public domain on a re-write of a classic tale for children?

I don't really have any idea, but probably would start with Googling the story, and the words public domain and/or copyright to see what I came up with.

Thanks Judy,
I have googled the story name and I found an on-line book about public domain issues. I have been reading through it as time allows. Really complicated stuff! I think that I am safe on this but will continue with my search for a few more weeks before going forward.
Hope to see you at the next critique meeting.

The public domain site that I am most familiar with is Project Gutenberg.
http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

For information on copywrite laws as it relates to public domain there is a lot of information online, such as:
http://eldred.cc/
http://www.copylaw.com/new_articles/PublicDomain.html

and most importantly:
http://www.copyright.gov/title17/

I hope this helps.

Wow! Thanks Louise!

Have you check the U.S. Copyright Office website yet? I'd start with that and then move to the public domain information.

Thank you Athena, I haven't checked anything yet, but will start there.
